I’m planning on a long journey under a month’s journey from Los Angeles to Vancouver in August of this year. Can anyone recommend a good travel book (s)? Web sources? Best route (s)? Must sees / dos?

I would recommend that you get the lonely planets book on California, its not too bad price wise and gives you a lot of info about California – where half of your trip will be going through. There is also a book by lonely planets – USA and Canada on a budget, which is a good book cause it goes through each state and gives you an idea of where some cheap accom is and stuff.
I would stop at San Fransisco and Seattle – they are really nice places. Yosemite is a really nice place also if you like that sort of thing, some nice walks to do through there.
As for routes – not too sure, when I went from LA to Vancouver I went on the Greyhound with set stops.
Go to the Rand McNally website, you can plan the whole trip from stop to stop and they also have a tool which tells you all of the places of interest along the way, it is excellent.
