Just a couple of extra notes about Pattaya (I've not been to Patong) - it is no accident that on every street corner which has a "massage parlour", the opposite corner has a STD clinic!.
The guys are, if anything prettier than the girls and they go in for a lot of cross-dressing!! Exercise caution!
Make sure you follow your malaria medication instructions to the letter and take some insect repellent with you. The mozzies in Thailand are man-eaters!!!
"Hot" Thai food in Thailand bears no resemblance to "hot" in England!!!!

Did you mean Patong or Patpong?

Patpong is a strip bars and nightmarkets in Bangkok and is really not worth the effort these days.

Patong is a district in Phuket which also has strip of bars.

Lots of info here: http://www.adultguide-bangkok.com/

Fancy expensive hotels will want you to pay for any extra "guests."

Stick with a hotel in the 700 baht to 1600 baht for Bangkok. Get a hotel in Bangkok in the Sukhumvit Road area, not far from Nana Skytrain stop. Even in this price range you will get a room with air and private shower. Fortuna Hotel on Soi 5 will do. Nana Hotel is right across the street from the Nana Entertainment Center.

Check out Soi Cowboy, Nana Entertainment on Sukhumvit Soi 4 and Pat Pong for the heck of it and visual entertainment. For up close, personal entertainment go to a beer bar, a beer bar will save you money. Skip Patong and after Bangkok head to Pattaya. Patong will only be a more expensive foray, not even counting the cost of the flight, plus only a cheap copy of Pattaya.

Pattaya is 2.5 hours from Bangkok by bus or around 1100-1200 baht by meter taxi. In Pattaya choose a hotel in the 500 baht to 1200 baht range. Look up the Areca Lodge, Bay Breeze, Intown Holiday Hotel and Honey Inn Hotel. From this area you can walk to most places. (All hotels will have A/C, private bathroom, TV and maid service.) Areca is best, Intown Holiday has a pool on roof, Honey Inn around 500-600 baht, lots of other choices on the soi near the Honey Inn.)

Happy trails!

Pattaya is really great for a group of bachelors .all the hotels allow you to bring ladies but the best ones cost you extra money(u need to give money to hotel, usually 4and5 star hotels are like this and it's between400-800baht beside the money u give to your guest)so i suggest to get a room in a 3or lower star hotel and pay nothing to hotel.(the hotels near walking street would be good for you like Siam bay view hotel but not expect that these hotels have all facilities, some of the Pattaya best hotels are garden sea view and Royal cliff but they charge u extra money and i'm not sure that the last one would really allows you to bring someone)chek the sites below
good luck

I would forget Patpong, where you really want to be in Soi Cowboy or Soi Nana.

Hotels to stay would be Nana Hotel or Majestics Suites for Bangkok

For Pattaya I would recommend Galaxy Suites

Now for all the little details you cannot publish in YA go to www.pattaya-addicts.com/forums this will give you a more details on the do's and don'ts on how to act to get the best value for money.

One place you must see is Eden Club Bangkok and Hell's Club (changed it name) Pattaya, but every-one will understand.

Go to the Rand McNally website, you can plan the whole trip from stop to stop and they also have a tool which tells you all of the places of interest along the way, it is excellent.

I would recommend that you get the lonely planets book on California, its not too bad price wise and gives you a lot of info about California - where half of your trip will be going through. There is also a book by lonely planets - USA and Canada on a budget, which is a good book cause it goes through each state and gives you an idea of where some cheap accom is and stuff.

I would stop at San Fransisco and Seattle - they are really nice places. Yosemite is a really nice place also if you like that sort of thing, some nice walks to do through there.

As for routes - not too sure, when I went from LA to Vancouver I went on the Greyhound with set stops.

Keep him active and occupied for a long period of time, no sleep. By the time he gets on the plane, he can't help but to doze off. Bring puzzle games and stuff to keep him occupied so he won't be so noisy.

I'm a former Flight Attendant and I've flown with my own kids many times at this age. We do a lot of flying between Europe and California, a similar flight.

I wont sugar-coat things, this is a bad age! They're mobile but don't have the logic or discipline to stay seated. I really, really recommend bringing his car seat along. Even if you didn't buy him a seat, try to ask nicely at check in if they can give him an extra seat, if the flight is not full. I really found it helpful to have them strapped in and found that they were calmer. This is also the safest way to fly with him and not to scare you but you do have to keep him contained for taxi and take-off. People have been "off loaded" for not controlling their toddler!

But that wont be you because you're going to go out and buy a few new things, he's never seen before and pull one or two out at crucial times of the flight like taxi and when he gets cranky. Nothing that makes noise! Even a quiet noise played 10,000 times will drive the other passengers nutty, if you don't go crazy first. Toddler love repetition but they also like stickers, coloring items, play dough, pinwheels, chunky books with pop-up windows, simple plastic animals, trucks and cars that roll, linking and stacking toys, etc. Nothing that can't be lost!

Bring his own blanket and second-favorite stuffed toy (no. 1 gets packed).

Snacks! Nothing too sticky, sweet or salty. You are allowed drinks meant for him in "reasonable" quantities.

I highly recommend a good baby carrier. He's far too big for a front pack but a good-quality one should go to age 2-3. I found my sling useful but a wrap, pouch or front/back carrier is good too.

Others might recommend "drugging" him. It's not entirely innocent. I saw wired kids twice on flights because they can get the *opposite* reaction. Talk to your ped and make sure it's something he's had before. I have never done it with my own and we've been fine.

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

I go into more detail on all of the above. Any other questions, my contact info is at the end.

Have a good trip!
